FIREWORKS and DOGS DO NOT MIX! With Independence Day upon us, please don't forget how negatively the loud cracks of the holiday fireworks affect your four-legged loved ones. The kids on our street have been sending bottle rockets flying into the air for over two weeks now (and I hear Albert Cominsky is not faring so well himself). It's driving Foster totally nuts. Foster's been drinking the Calming Solution by Pet Essences like his mom drinks Wheach Beer by O'Fallon Brewery! Read these Pet Safety Tips for the 4th of July by the ASPCA.
Take care of your pets over the next few weeks - help them to squash their fears of that loud bang that is a firecracker!

Want to help a great cat??? Do you remember the beautiful, young Seal Point Himalayan that we had in the store back in August and September 2007? Well, two of our great customers, Adam and Sydney, adopted her and, unfortunately, 'Ginger' has since been diagnosed with a myriad of health problems that are really breaking her owners' bank. We at Pets in the City really want to help this couple keep Ginger in their home. Therefore, since Sydney is a talented artist, she will be selling her wares at Pets in the City to put into the "Ginger Fund." Sydney paints on window panes...it's very cool! Take a look at her work and stop in soon to help a worthy cause! http://public.fotki.com/awoehler/sydneys-projects/artstuff/art/sunbathingcloseup.html |

The Benefits of NEEM...
Not just a Tree in India...
This time a year, I spend a lot of time talking to customers about the benefits of neem for fighting fleas and ticks. Yet, as they say on Television commericals, '...but wait, there's more.'
In India, the neem tree is variously known as "Divine Tree", "Heal All", "Nature's Drugstore", "Village Pharmacy" and "Panacea for all diseases." Products made from neem have proven medicinal properties, including anthelmintic, antifungal, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-infertility, and sedative. Neem is considered a major component in Ayurvedic medicine and is particularly prescribed for skin disease.
In fighting those summer parasites, the unique feature of neem products is that they do not directly kill the pests, but alter the life-processing behavior in such a manner that the insect can no longer feed, breed or undergo metamorphosis. Neem is deemed very effective in the treatment of scabies although only preliminary scientific proof exists which still has to be corroborated, and is recommended for those who are sensitive to permethrin, a known insecticide which might be an irritant. Also, the scabies mite has yet to become resistant to neem, so in persistent cases neem has been shown to be very effective. There is also anecdotal evidence of its effectiveness in treating infestations of head lice in humans. A tea made of boiled neem leaves, sometimes combined with other herbs such as ginger, can be ingested to fight intestinal worms.
Neem oil is potent stuff. Neem is a plant, but that does not automatically mean it is safe. Some of the world's strongest toxins are herbal. Read about neem's toxicity before you take it internally, or give it to a pet internally. There are situations where neem home remedies are perfectly safe and effective, and there are diseases where you need a diagnosis, and the guidance of a medical practitioner. Neem can often beat the pharmaceuticals in our arsenal, with none of the undesirable side effects. But neem is not a miracle cure. There are limits to what it can do. Recognize the limits, and you will find that what's left is still more than enough to make people insist, "It's miraculous!" Beware the snake oil salesmen, but don't throw out the baby with the bath water. Neem oil works....just do your homework.
Pets in the City carries many items with Neem as a main ingredient, including Shampoos, Sprays, Dips, and Collars. |

New Items...
Goughnut Dog Toy
We saw these toys online a while back and ordered one for Lexi Lu to try out and abuse. It's been well over three months, and she is yet to make a mark on this toy....and not for lack of trying. This bright green doughnut-shaped rubber toy passed my Pit Bull test... At $21.99, the Goughnut may seem pricey, but this is a toy that will last!
Party Animal Organic Canned Dog Food
We heard about this food from a webgroup that we belong to. After calling the owner and talking for a while about his great product, we decided to give it whirl in our shop! Party Animal Organic Canned Dog Food is between a stew and pate in consistency and is certified organic, made and sourced in the US, and passed the three-dog Pizano taste test!
Fleur-de-lis Dog Collars & Leashes, as well as some very cool new Skull & Crossbones Collars and Leashes
Back in January, we took a short vacation to Tampa and scouted out the cool pet stores in town while we were there. Tampa's largest festival, The Gasparilla Fest, was scheduled that weekend. Being a pirate festival, every pet store in Tamap was stocked full of skull and crossbone merchandise. We just loved the girlie and dude-looking skull and crossbones collars that Preston Collars makes. When placing the order, we noticed a fabulous purple collar with a gold fleur de lis...perfect for Soulard!
Myristin Joint Supplement
There's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing your beloved four-legged companion in pain. For years, glucosamine has been the primary treatment for canine joint problems. Now there is Myristin® Special Canine Joint Formula, available in a convenient and tasty tablet form. Dog lovers everywhere have seen a dramatic improvement in their pets' comfort, mobility, agility and happiness when they start them on Myristin® Special Canine Joint Formula, even after years of treatment with glucosamine alone. Even dogs with whose joints are in really bad shape have enjoyed unbelievable results. Myristin® Special Canine Formula is designed for old and young dogs alike. Feeding Myristin® Special Canine Formula to younger and active sporting dogs can also help prevent the onset of joint problems.
Himalayan Dog Chew comes from an ancient recipe by the people of Nepal. In the mountains surrounding Mt. Everest at more than 15,000 feet, the chews are made using traditional methods with Yak or Cow Milk and all natural products (no chemicals or preservatives). Now, this piece of himalayan culture is available to you and your Dog.
Orijen Pet Food
THE BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE CONCEPT. Have you witnessed the trend of high-carbohydrate "holistic" pet foods that feature fashionable ingredients, more often for their consumer appeal than for any nutritional benefit to the dog or cat? ORIJEN REPRESENTS A NEW DIRECTION IN PET NUTRITION: BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE. The concept is simple: include the fresh, whole foods that nature evolved dogs and cats to eat (in correct ratio and quantity), and exclude ingredients like cereal grains that are not part of the natural diet. High-protein, low-carbohydrate, and grain-free, ORIJEN features fresh regional ingredients in a Biologically Appropriate ratio of 70 percent meat, 30 percent fruit and vegetables and zero grain (70/30/0). The metabolism of cats and dogs has naturally evolved to operate on a largely carnivorous diet, and by better matching the natural diet, ORIJEN promotes peak health in cats and dogs of all breeds and life stages, nourishing them as Nature originally intended. | |
